After announcing an-year-long celebration to commemorate Dr Bhupen Hazarika’s birth centenary, the Assam Cabinet recently approved the renaming of Mohanbari-Dibrugarh Airport after Dr Bhupen Hazarika airport.
Disclosing the decision, Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma posted on his X handle, “Dibrugarh’s Mohanbari Airport will soon be known as Dr Bhupen Hazarika Airport. With this renaming, Assam’s two capitals will have their airports named after the two Bharat Ratnas from the State — a befitting tribute to their contributions.”
Further, a one-day special session of the Assam Legislative Assembly will be held on June 9 to get the nod in the Assembly regarding the renaming the airport.
In the early 1950s, this airport, located around 15 kms from the city of Dibrugarh, was first put into operation as a fully functional facility. Built in a total area of 386 acres, it is the fourth busiest airport after Guwahati, Agartala and Imphal airports in North East India.
