Heralding a new dawn for Assam in interdisciplinary medical research, the Government of Assam signed an Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Guwahati to establish a first-of-its-kind integrated multi-speciality 350-bed hospital: Assam Advanced Healthcare Innovation Institute (AAHI). The agreement was inked in presence of Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma and Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
As part of the MoU, Government of Assam has committed ₹ 546 crore for the project while IIT-G will contribute the required land & expertise.
“The collaboration between the Government of Assam & IIT Guwahati is a first-of-its-kind between a State Government and an academic institute. While our medical colleges primarily focus on clinical aspects, the new institute will focus on technology & research to facilitate innovation in the medical field,”. Dr. Sarma said.
Once completed, AAHI will usher in interdisciplinary medical research & innovations. This will enhance India’s medical tech industry in the coming years. The partnership will also facilitate the setting up of a research institute and a postgraduate medical college to offer advanced medical degrees like DNB, MD, PhD, MS, MD-PhD, etc.
Further, the partnership will mark the amalgamation of various disciplines like Engineering, Medical Sciences and Industry 4.0 Technologies to foster research collaborations with leading global universities in areas like stem cell therapy, diagnostics, therapeutics, molecular biology, regenerative medicine, etc.
Later, the Chief Minister along with the Union Education Minister also inaugurated the Technology Incubation Centre of Guwahati Biotech Park, Amingaon along with the three day Assam Biotech Conclave-2022.
