It is heartening to see that there is an increasing awareness about farming of various fruits, both exotic and common, among the farmers and the common people. Also laudable is the fact that financial institutions like the World Bank are aiding these initiatives with projects like Assam Agribusiness and Rural Transformation Project (APART) besides, of course, farmer welfare schemes.
Even the Department of Agriculture of the Government of Assam has become very proactive. Programmes like ‘A Day Out with Farmers’ held recently in Bokakhat with support from the Government and Brahmaputra Valley Farmer Producers’ Company Pvt. Ltd, a local business unit, are frequently being organised in other parts of the State.
It goes without saying that farmers are the unsung heroes who produce food for the people. The prosperity of a nation depends upon the wellbeing of the farming community. Also, what must not be forgotten is the importance of women in agriculture for the overall socio-economic development of a society.
However, those who are now seriously taking to farming as a career option must use technologies to reduce dependence on nature and minimise damage from unpredictable events to become self-reliant.
