In a major boost to river tourism in Assam, Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma flagged off two state-of-the-art catamaran vessels on May 13, 2022. Each vessel has a capacity of 100 passengers and will house amenities for divyangs, senior citizens, women and children. Both vessels also have a capacity to carry 50 motorcycles.
The Chief Minister also laid the foundation stone for construction of Guwahati Ferry Terminal, with shopping centres, restaurants and parking lots in it. The terminal will be constructed at a cost of ₹ 289 crore. The construction is expected to be completed in 24 months.
Addressing the occasion, Dr. Sarma hailed the initiative as a “first-of-its-kind in a river system in India”. Transport Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary and Guwahati Lok Sabha MP Queen Oja, among others, were present in the meeting.
