The Registrar General of India (RGI) in an official communique has informed the Assam Government that 9,35,682 people of the State, who failed to get their Aadhaar cards because their biometrics submitted during the NRC (National Register of Citizens) updating process in 2019, were locked, will now get them courtesy the Unique Identification Authority of India.
The decision was conveyed to the State Government on August 27, Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma told the media in a press conference on August 28. RGI, under the Ministry of Home Affairs, has asked the UIDAI to release the locked biometrics of 9,35,682 residents of the State.
According to the RGI order, the decision was taken following the advice of the Solicitor General of India through the Ministry of Law and Justice.
Dr. Sarma said the Central Government has instructed the UIDAI to issue Aadhar Cards to these people since it has been established that there is “no correlation between inclusion of name in National Register of Citizens (NRC) and Aadhaar registration”.
These 9,35,682 people had submitted the biometrics for Aadhaar cards between February to August, 2019, at Aadhaar centres, which also doubled up as NRC centres. “It was due to a confusion that the biometrics of these people were locked,” the Chief Minister clarified.
“As a result of these. These individuals were facing multiple problems like not being able to apply for scholarships, get ration cards, etc. We had been pursuing the matter with the Government of India,” said the Assam Chief Minister.
