Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma dedicated 365 ICU beds in 23 district hospitals across 21 districts in Assam in a programme held at the GMCH Auditorium recently. The initiative is being backed by the E-Gov Foundation, Karuna Trust and the National Health Mission.
He also launched five other projects to strengthen health care services in the State.
A National Emergency Life Support (NELS) Skill Centre in GMCH which has five modern skill stations for training of faculty, staff and students in advanced emergency life support skills was also launched on the day, besides a Multidisciplinary Research Unit (MRU) to strengthen research activities of faculty and students of the medical college.
Meanwhile, 32 Slice CT Scan machines for advanced medical diagnosis of patients in the hospital will also be purchased with support from Indian Oil Corporation Limited. A molecular oncology lab in the State Cancer Institute at the GMCH, which is a first-of-its-kind lab in the North East, will be set up to aid in analysing genetic markers and conducting screening.
An Asset Management Portal, designed by the National Informatics Centre, Assam for all medical colleges will assist in tracking and maintaining medical assets and enhance productivity.
In his address, the Assam Chief Minister said that the State is spending 6% of its GSDP in health care services which will go up in the coming years. Also present on the occasion was Assam Health Minister Keshab Mahanta, and representatives from E-Gov Foundation, Karuna Trust, and senior officials of the State Government.
