The Central Government has approved the establishment of an Employees State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) Medical College at Beltola in Guwahati.
Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, Union Minister for Labour & Employment and Youth Affairs & Sports, chaired the 194th meeting of the ESI Corporation at ESIC Headquarters in New Delhi on October 8. He announced several key decisions of ESI Corporation for strengthening the infrastructure and medical facilities of ESIC.
Dr Mandaviya announced that ESI Corporation has approved in-principle for the establishment of 10 New ESIC Medical Colleges in the country. Of these 10, one will be established in Guwahati.
The Union Minister said that the decision will support the announcement made by the Prime Minister during the last Independence Day speech of creating new 75,000 medical seats in the next 5 years.
Dr. Mandaviya also announced that for strengthening ESIC’s infrastructure to deliver and meet the medical needs of insured workers, the Corporation approved proposals for acquisition of land for construction of an ESI Dispensary and Branch Office at seven different locations across the country, including one ESI Dispensary and Branch Office at Dhubri.
The admission policy and procedure for undergraduate courses in ESIC Medical Education Institutions has been approved by the Central Government. The policy includes an “Insured Persons (IPs) Quota” in addition to the “All India Quota” and the “State Government Quota”.
Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma hailed the Central Government’s decision to set up an ESIC medical college at Beltola in Guwahati.
Taking to his social media handle X, Chief Minister Dr Sarma wrote, “My gratitude to Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi ji for approving an ESIC Medical College in Guwahati.”
“This will further strengthen our efforts to improve our medical sector & offer the best treatment to patients within the State. This will also add to our network of Medical Colleges,” the Chief Minister added.
Employees’ State Insurance Corporation is one of the two main statutory social security bodies under the administrative control of the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India.
The location where the new ESIC Medical College is to be established at Beltola in Guwahati already has an ESIC Hospital.
