In a major step towards strengthening the State’s internal security and modernizing the police force, Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma recently inaugurated a state-of-the-art Commando Battalion Camp in the Pabhoi region of Biswanath, near the Assam–Arunachal Pradesh border.
The newly inaugurated facility is the 5th Assam Police Commando Battalion campus established under the State Government’s ambitious initiative to build a smart, efficient, and modern police force. Of the five districts selected for such camps—Karbi Anglong, Hailakandi, Charaideo, Sadiya, and Biswanath—the Biswanath unit is the first to be completed and inaugurated.
Spread over 218 bighas of land, the ₹177-cr campus is designed to house 400 personnel and is equipped with advanced infrastructure. The facility includes a helipad, sports and parade grounds, a community centre, namghar, modern computer laboratory, and a school for the children of police personnel. It also features a 10-bed hospital for officers and their families, along with robust fire safety systems and other essential amenities—reflecting the Government’s commitment to improving the welfare and readiness of police forces.
Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Sarma said, “In 2021, we created five new commando battalions in Karbi Anglong, Hailakandi, Charaideo, Sadiya, and Biswanath. Today, with the inauguration of the fifth battalion campus at Pabhoi, it is indeed a proud moment for Assam Police and for the State.”
He further emphasized that these specialized commando units are being equipped to handle diverse challenges, including counter-insurgency operations, disaster response, and law-and-order duties in sensitive regions. The establishment of such modern facilities, he said, would not only enhance the operational capabilities of Assam Police but also contribute to maintaining long-term peace and stability in the State.
The government’s initiative aligns with its larger vision of transforming Assam Police into one of the most modern and professional forces in the country through continuous capacity building, technological integration, and improved living conditions for personnel.
