Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma has said that three crore saplings will be planted across the State between August 1 and 15 as part of the second edition of Amrit Brikshya Andolan .
Launching the App to facilitate registration for the Amrit Brikshya Andolan Phase II, Dr. Sarma said that Assam has set a target to plant 10 crore saplings in a span of three-four years, which will help increase the forest cover by 2%.
“This year, our target is to plant three crore saplings from August 1 to 15. In Amrit Brikshya Andolan – Phase I in 2023, the target was planting one crore saplings in a single day, but we planted 1.12 crore with 90% survival rate,” said Dr Sarma.
The event is expected to mobilise communities across Assam, encouraging widespread participation in tree planting to enhance Assam’s green cover and contribute to global environmental efforts.
The Chief Minister said that the State Government has already roped in various agencies and central forces including the army, air force, SSB, CRPF, BSF, schools, colleges, self-help groups and NGOs to implement the ‘Amrit Brikshya Andolan – II’ campaign.
“We expect around 50 lakh individuals to join our efforts in Phase II. We have set up 4,000 distribution points so that people can pick up the tree saplings from the nearest point. Last time, we took the saplings from private parties, but in this phase, saplings will be supplied by nurseries of the Forest Department.”
