The State Child Protection Society is currently undertaking a 90-day awareness campaign in Assam to curb all forms of child rights violation. Different districts have already begun activities around raising awareness and bringing together both stakeholders to act and address these issues.
The awareness drive kicked off on June 12 from the Assam Administrative Staff College under the aegis of the Women and Child Development Department.
Among the thrust areas in the campaign are child labour, child marriage, child trafficking, and child substance abuse. The day was observed by flagging off the mobile vans displaying informative messages. A multi-stakeholder meeting with representatives from various departments like Panchayat and Rural Development, Home, School Education, and Health was also organised.
What is attracting added attention in the campaign is a street play this reporter encountered in the Ganeshguri area recently. Talking to Asom Barta, director of Navanatyam, a street play group, Nabajit Konwar spoke of his satisfaction in being of use to society. “We are actors. However, if our art can be of use to humanity, it gives us added satisfaction. Such initiatives must be encouraged in rural areas to create a better future for our children,” Nabajit said expressing his satisfaction at being invited to write and perform street plays on the theme.
Among other dignitaries during the launch were actor Ravi Sarma, Justice (Retd.) Mir Alfaz Ali, Mukesh Ch. Sahu, Principal Secretary, WCD, Government of Assam, Nayanmoni Saikia, Arjuna Awardee, et al.
