In 2020, I was enrolled into Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana for seven bighas of my land under Sali paddy cultivation. My entire crop was damaged because of a major flood that year. Imagine what would be my state had I not been insured under PMFBY? Insurance officials and representatives from the Agriculture Department assessed my damage and deposited ₹14,850 in my bank account.”
Abani Das of Saldah village of Bajali just does not want to stop thanking the Government for the support he received when he thought ‘it was all over’ for him. Schemes like these combined with many far reaching programmes initiatied by the Government of India and executed at the ground by the Government of Assam have made life meaningful for farmers across the State. This has led to the growth of the agriculture and allied sector in the State.
The objective of this review is to outline all the benefits available to the farmers of Assam under State/Central sector schemes and Externally Aided Projects contributing to the overall well being of farmers in Assam.
CM Dashboard findings suggest that Government support exists for different types of farmers at various stages of their farm livelihood from production to post-harvest ensuring a sense of livelihood security to our farmers. The Government of Assam has also taken various initiatives in the agriculture & allied sector for value-chain improvement including infrastructure over and above the regular benefits reaching the beneficiaries.
Assam with almost 80% of its population dependent on agriculture contributes the highest i.e 25% to the State’s GSDP. Though 85% of the farmers are marginal and small land holding farmers as per the latest Agriculture Census, the State has recorded an annual average growth rate of 10.26% and its per capita income has jumped 204% from FY 2013 to FY 2023.
