The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, on February 29 approved the establishment of three semiconductor units under ‘Development of Semiconductors and Display Manufacturing Ecosystems in the country. Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, while briefing media on the Cabinet decision, said that of the approved three semiconductor units, one will be set in Assam’s Morigaon district at a projected cost of ₹27,000 cr.
The Union Minister said that Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Pvt Ltd (“TSAT”) will set up a semiconductor unit in Morigaon district of the State. “TSAT semiconductor is developing indigenous advanced semiconductor packaging technologies, including flip chip and ISIP (integrated system in package) technologies. Its capacity will be 48 million per day. It will cover segments of Automotive, electric vehicles, consumer electronics, telecom, mobile phones, etc,” said Vaishnav.
The Foundation Stone laying ceremony will be done in the next 100 days, the Minister added. The Jagiroad paper mill site (Erstwhile HPC paper mill) in Morigaon district has been selected by the Assam Government for establishment of TATA’s semiconductor project.
