The euphoria of a Government-job in a transparent and corruption free manner has warmed the cockles of many hearts in the State. While many have settled down some are trying to do so while negotiating the lanes and bylanes of these places and the hierarchies in their respective offices. For some, it is a dream come true, while for a few others, the dream could have had a better ending.
One of them is Kamaljit Bordoloi, a young man with mixed emotions these days. Whereas he is very excited to join in Karimganj with the Water Resources Department, he is also a little upset that he had to leave his ailing father in Morigaon under someone else’s care. His seven year itch after his postgraduation in Commerce ended when he qualified for a Grade III job.
“My father has been ailing for quite some time now. He has gone through a tough time after the death of my mother. It was difficult for me to bring him this far. Having struggled for a job since 2016, I did not want to give up on this responsibility of serving society. In a short time, my colleagues have become like my family. I am enjoying this experience,” Bordoloi told Asom Barta.
Sangita Deka of Prafulla Nagar of Mangaldai in Darrang district is 23 and visually challenged. Yet, that could not deter her from getting a Grade III Government service in Burha Lokopriya Bordoloi Higher Secondary School. Her father, a hand cart puller, had all this while taken the responsobility of the family. He is now a cancer patient. Sangita travels 35 km daily in the hope of a better future. “My workplace is like my second home now. There were initial apprehension, but those turned out to be unfounded when I joined the school,” she said.
Life, however, has been kind to Abhijit Baishya of Kamrup district. One among the 44,703 candidates who were drafted by the Assam Government in service in the month of June, he has joined a Grade IV job in the Pranam Commission under the Department of Finance. “My first day on the job was memorable. The office is small but beautiful. My seniors were there to assist me. Prior to this job, I was assisting my father in his business. However, I am now learning the discipline required for a Government job,” Baishya confided to this reporter.
Bibhuti Das, Kamaljit Bordoloi and Hirak Jyoti Saikia are among other names who have joined the Government by dint of their hard work. The routine for Bibhuti, who hails from Dadara in Kamrup, is now set. Each morning at around 9am, he starts from his rented accommodation at Kahilipara in Guwahati, on his two wheeler, to the office of State Vigilance Commission, where he has joined as a LDA Computer Operator. “It is a sheer coincidence that I had applied for the same post in the year 2018. It was after five years that I have secured the job that I had wanted. I am very pleased to have earned this for myself by dint of my ability and hard work,” Das told this newsletter. Bibhuti, a BTech in Electronics and Communication from Central Institute of Engineering in Kokrajhar, a deemed to be university under the Ministry of Electronics, had appeared in many competitive examinations before getting a job of his choice. “I will serve the society with sincerity and integrity, virtues my parents have taught me,” he said in his interaction.
Hirak Jyoti, meanwhile, travelled quite a distance from Nagaon to Dhemaji to be present in the office of the Transport Department, on June 1, where he is now a Grade III employee. “I came to Dhemaji on May 29. I first started looking for a rented accommodation and bought necessary utensils and other stuff required for my new accommodation. On the first day, my senior gave me valuable inputs required for the job. My only worry is the health of my mother. The distance between Nagaon and Dhemaji is making things a bit difficult for me, at present. Moreover, I got married in April. Bringing my wife here will have its own set of challenges. Yet, I have no complaints. I am thankful to the Government for this clean and transparent mechanism that has enabled me to get this job,” Saikia poured his heart out to this reporter over phone.
