26-year-old Rohit Agarwala of Marwaripatty Dibrugarh used to travel minimum of 30 to 45 mins to reach his office located Chowkidingee, however since the last few days his travel time has been shortened to maximum of 10 minutes. This has been possible because of the new flyover being recently dedicated to the people of the city. “The distance between my home and office is hardly 2.5 km however earlier due to massive traffic during the office hours, it used to take over 30 minutes to reach the destination, resulting which many days I marked as late entrant and my salary got deducted,” said Rohit while speaking to Asom Barta, adding, “Thankfully, the situation is no more the same with the inauguration of new flyover connecting Thana Chariali to Chowkidingee Chariali, now it takes only 10 minutes to reach the office and even get there ahead of time.” In the same line, Arpana Hazarika a student of DHSK Kanoi college said, “The developments have been a boon to the people. The new flyovers are ensuring smoother travel inside the city while enabling separate vehicle traffic from pedestrians, making roads safer and more efficient.” Rohit & Arpana’s sentiment reflects broader impact of the new infrastructure, which is easing the lives of over 1.5 million residents of Dibrugarh. Giving a massive urban infrastructural boost to the largest city of Upper Assam, Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa & Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal recently inaugurated two flyovers one at Convoy Road and another at the junction of the old National Highway 37, connecting Thana Chariali and Chowkidingee Chariali. While inaugurating, the Chief Minister announced that the Convoy Road flyover has been named after Dr Lila Gogoi, a prominent writer and educator, while the flyover between Thana Chariali and Chowkidingee Chariali has been named in honour of noted poet Nilamani Phookan. “Government is minutely focusing on the comprehensive development of Dibrugarh,” said the Chief Minister, “In addition, foundation stones have been laid for four more flyover including Mancotta Road (₹83.62 Cr), Amolapatty Chariali (₹157.73 Cr), Lahowal-Bordubi-Tinsukia junction with old NH-37 (₹71.52 Cr) and Lezai Kalakhowa Road (₹62.15 Cr). The Chief Minister further informed that Public Works Department has completed the preparatory processes for the construction of these flyovers. “Infrastructure development efforts are being intensified across Assam, including plans for an underwater tunnel across the Brahmaputra River, an elevated corridor through Kaziranga National Park, and a new economic corridor,” Chief Minister stated, adding, “National highway connecting Guwahati and Dibrugarh is expected to be completed within a year.” Dibrugarh has been granted the status of Assam’s second capital, “Construction of the Chief Minister’s Secretariat, the Assam Secretariat, a new Legislative Assembly building, a 1,500-capacity hall, residential quarters for legislators, and a 100-bedded Circuit House is set to start from September. Legislative Assembly sessions will now be held twice a year, alternating between Guwahati and Dibrugarh,” the Chief Minister asserted. Government of Assam is working on constructing a stadium with a seating capacity of 35,000 at Khanikor, and an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer will be appointed as Commissioner of the Dibrugarh Municipal Corporation. Concluding the speech, the Chief Minister announced that ₹100 Cr has been allocated to Dibrugarh University for strengthening the infrastructure of the educational institute. Happy to join the ceremony, Union Minister & Dibrugarh MP Sarbananda Sonowal posted in X, “A new momentum to Dibrugarh's infra & urban connectivity - Glad to join Hon'ble Assam CM Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma for the inauguration of the Bagmibor Nilmoni Phukan Flyover (Thana Chariali) and the Dr. Leela Gogoi Flyover (Convoy Road) in the city.” The Union Minister also shared that led by Hon'ble PM Shri Narendra Modi ji’s mantra of Transformation through Transportation, these two flyovers built at a combined cost of around ₹117 crore will enhance seamless travel for commuters, reduce traffic congestion and add a new dimension to the city's beauty.
