Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Chairman of Tata Sons Limited N Chandrasekaran performed the bhumi pujan of the ₹27,000-cr semiconductor assembly and test facility at Jagiroad in Morigaon district last month.
Dr Sarma assured the Chairman of Tata Sons Limited that the company will face no difficulty in setting up this industry and people of Assam will be grateful for this facility.
“Setting up of this facility will herald industrial development in the State leading to employment opportunities for our youths”, said Dr Sarma and added: “Once operational, it will transform the industrial landscape of Assam and herald a new era of development.”
Dr. Sarma thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Tata Sons Limited for taking the initiative to set up the semiconductor assembly and test facility at Jagiroad.
Speaking on the occasion, N Chandrasekaran, Chairman Tata Sons said the Tata group has long association with Assam and over 60,000 people have been working in different Tata platforms in Assam and hoped the group’s latest entry into electronics sector in the State will also generate huge employment opportunities apart from creating an impactful eco-system for developments in the State.
The Tata Sons chairman said that for Jagiroad Semiconductor facility, the company has already employed 1,000 people from Assam.
“At its capacity, it will employ 27,000 people. Out of this majority will be direct jobs. We hope sometime in 2025 we will be able to complete this facility and quickly start operations,” Chandrasekaran said.
The project is slated for completion within a year, targeting next year April for full operations. The semiconductor plant is expected to produce 48 million chips per day, positioning Assam on the global industrial map. This will be an assembly, testing, marking, and packaging (ATMP) facility.
The Tata semiconductor assembly and test facility at Jagiroad is India’s first indigenous semiconductor assembly and test facility.
