In a huge boost to the dairy farmers and the dairy sector, the Government of Assam has rolled out a new subsidy scheme of ₹5 per litre of milk to the farmers supplying milk to processing units.
Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma while addressing the gathering, said, “Assam is witnessing promising developments in the dairy sector marking steady progress towards self-reliant milk production.”
The Chief Minister also announced that the Government of Assam in collaboration with the National Dairy Development Board(NDDB) will set up 1 lakh litres of milk processing plants at Dhemaji, Jorhat and Dibrugarh respectively through North East Dairy and Foods Limited.
A total of 542 Milk Cooperative Societies, representing 19,030 dairy farmers have received direct financial support ₹5 per litre for up to 900 litres per month.
The Chief Minister also informed about the developments and posted in X, “This will encourage them to increase production, boost their income and stir a dairy revolution in our rural areas, which will feed into the ambitious processing plants we are building and churn out more opportunities for the people of Assam.”
The initiative is expected to benefit over 20,000 dairy producers across the State.
The Chief Minister also performed Bhoomi Pujan for expansion of Purabi Dairy plant.
The ₹104 crore expansion project is an outcome of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between West Assam Milk Producers’ Cooperative Union Ltd (WAMUL) and NDDB during the Advantage Assam 2.0 Summit held earlier this year. The upgraded facility is likely to double the plant’s milk processing capacity from 1.5 lakh litres per day (LLPD) to 3 lakh litres per day (LLPD)
