The latest efforts by the Government of Assam to solve boundary rows with neighbouring States like Meghalaya, Mizoram and Nagaland are laudable. These efforts should have come a lot earlier. Any dispute at the inter-State boundary makes life difficult for its inhabitants. There is no disputing the fact that if these negotiations attain its formal objectives, these residents at the borders will chart a different trajectory for themselves.
Even at the international level, the border dispute between India and Pakistan is still lingering in various ways although there is no doubt as to the territories owned by respective countries.
Even China is brazenly violating the McMohan line limits to occupy Indian territories. Russia, a powerful country, is eying Ukrainian territory. Palestine and Israel are already locked in a never-ending dispute at their respective borders. What is on display are vested quarters which are instigating actors who are coming forward to solve these border rows once and for all.
The moot point is that food, war ships, armaments, and oil or to put it bluntly it is commerce or profits that is playing a part in ensuring that these disputes linger and are not solved.
