In a memorable milestone, after 143 years Silchar Municipal Board has been elevated to Silchar Municipal Corporation, marking a transformative chapter in Assam’s urban developmental journey.
When the new signboard displaying ‘Corporation’ in place of the previous ‘Municipality Board’ was officially unveiled by Rajya Sabha MP Kanad Purkayastha, a new journey for Silchar begun. The official programme was attended by Silchar MLA Dipayan Chakraborty, Udharbond MLA Mihir Kanti Shome, former Silchar MLA Dilip Paul, former Municipality Chairperson and now a Rajya Sabha MP from West Bengal, Sushmita Dev, and other distinguished citizens.
Later, addressing a meeting, Rajya Sabha MP Kanad Purkayastha paid glowing tributes to Late Kamini Kumar Chanda, the first Chairman of Silchar Municipal Board in 1913, and remembered the successive chairmen who contributed to building the foundation of civic administration in Silchar.
“We are not merely witnessing an administrative upgrade; we are stepping into a new era of urban governance that aligns with our city’s aspirations,” he stated, stressing city’s strategic and cultural significance as the heart of the Barak Valley, “The transition to a Municipal Corporation was inevitable given the population growth, expanding municipal boundaries and increasing urban demands. This upgrade will pave the way for enhanced financial devolution, superior infrastructure, and smarter urban planning.”
The MP expressed gratitude to Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, hailing his visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to equitable development across both the Brahmaputra and Barak Valleys, “It is because of his foresight and firm governance that this long-awaited transformation has finally materialized,” he added.
