Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently undertook a momentous two-day visit to Assam, marking yet another significant chapter in the State’s development journey.
The visit, packed with inaugurations, foundation stone-laying ceremonies, public interactions, and cultural engagements, underscored the Central Government’s continuous efforts on strengthening infrastructure, boosting industrial capacity and preserving Assam’s rich cultural legacy.
During the visit, the Prime Minister inaugurated and laid the foundation stone of projects worth approximately ₹15,600 cr, spanning aviation infrastructure, fertiliser production, memorial development, and youth outreach.
On the first day of his visit, the Prime Minister inaugurated the state-of-the-art Bamboo Orchids Terminal Building at Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport. Built at a cost of nearly ₹4,000 cr, the new terminal stands as one of the most modern aviation facilities in the North East, significantly enhancing Assam’s air connectivity with the rest of the country and beyond.

Spread across nearly 1.4 lakh square metres, the terminal has been designed to handle up to 1.3 crore passengers annually, making it future-ready to cater to the region’s growing passenger traffic. Architecturally distinctive, the terminal draws inspiration from Assam’s natural wealth and cultural ethos, with its design theme aptly titled “Bamboo Orchids”—a tribute to the State’s biodiversity, traditional materials, and aesthetic heritage.
After the inauguration, the Prime Minister posted in X, “It’s a special day for Guwahati as the Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi International Airport gets a new terminal building. This new terminal will boost the local economy and encourage tourism. The emphasis on technological innovations, as well as the connection with nature and sustainability, is also deeply appreciable.”
As part of the airport programme, the Prime Minister also unveiled an 80-foot-tall statue of Assam’s first Chief Minister Gopinath Bordoloi and further posted, “Inaugurated a statue of Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi at Guwahati airport. His life and ideals, as well as his contributions to Assam’s progress, will keep motivating generations.”
The Prime Minister led a massive roadshow from the airport towards the BJP headquarters in Guwahati. Thousands of people lined the streets, extending a warm welcome as the Prime Minister greeted citizens and supporters along the route. Later, he spent the night at the State Guest House, Koinadhora in Guwahati.
On the second day of his visit, the Prime Minister interacted with 25 students from Assam as part of Pariksha pe Charcha (PPC) programme in Guwahati. The interaction happened at a cruise vessel- MV Charaidew 2 on the Brahmaputra River in Guwahati.
During the Pariksha Pe Charcha 2026 event, the Prime Minister provided valuable tips on tackling board and entrance examinations. The students have been selected from Government, residential and private schools in Baksa, Dima Hasao, Kokrajhar, Golaghat, Kamrup Metropolitan, Morigaon, Dibrugarh, Cachar, Sribhumi,Karbi Anglong and Nalbari districts.

Following the interaction, the Prime Minister visited the newly constructed Swahid Smarak Kshetra in Guwahati, a memorial dedicated to the 855 martyrs of the Assam Movement. Paying homage at the Swahid Smarak Kshetra and offering tributes at the Swahid Pranam Jyoti, he stated, “Walking through the Swahid Gallery was a deeply moving experience, recalling the courage and sacrifices of the Bir Swahids martyred during the Assam Movement. The sacrifices made during the Assam movement are an integral part of Assam’s identity and collective memory.
