May 22, 2025 marked a red-letter day in the Railway connectivity and communication sector of the entire Northeast when Haibargaon Railway Station of Nagaon achieved a historic milestone by becoming the region’s first ever renovated station under the visionary Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated the station along with 102 others identified Amrit Stations, situated in 86 districts across 18 States and Union Territories of the nation which have been developed at a cost of over ₹1,100 cr. Under the scheme over 1,300 stations are being redeveloped with modern facilities, with the design reflecting regional architecture and enhancing passenger amenities.
The Prime Minister inaugurated the renovated station while attending a central programme held at Bikaner in Rajasthan.
Emphasizing the transformation over the past 11 years, the Prime Minister highlighted Indian Railways’ rapid progress, including the introduction of Vande Bharat, Amrit Bharat and Namo Bharat trains, with nearly 70 Vande Bharat routes enhancing connectivity across the country.

The 138-year-old Haibargaon Station has been reconstructed at a cost of ₹15.85 cr. The station has been equipped with a range of world-class passenger amenities, including Divyangjan-friendly features. The architectural design of the station reflects the principle of “Virasat Bhi Vikas Bhi”, blending modern utility with the essence of local Assamese culture and heritage.
Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya formally inaugurated the station in the presence of Union Minister Pabitra Margherita, Assam Cabinet Minister Keshab Mahanta, MLAs Rupak Sarma, Jitu Goswami among others.
Post the inauguration, the Assam Governor posted in X, “I had the privilege of witnessing the dedication of 103 Amrit Bharat Stations across the country, including the Haibargaon Amrit Bharat Station, virtually by the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji. This initiative is an extremely important step towards building a New India.”
The Governor expressed his confidence that the redeveloped AMRUT Station at Haibargaon will not only reduce geographical distance, but will also fulfil the aspirations of the masses, giving impetus to tourism, connectivity and regional development.
The Union Minister expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Modi for dedicating 103 Amrit Bharat Railway Stations to the nation, marking a significant step towards modernising Indian Railways. He added that PM Modi’s vision to transform Bharat’s rail connectivity and infrastructure is paving the way for a modern and interconnected nation. He also appreciated the efforts of Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in turning this vision into a reality and enhancing the railway ecosystem.
