In view of the constraint faced by farmers in India with regard to their income and livelihood, it is very important for governments of the day to continue with welfare schemes. Of late, many States in the country have waived off farmers’ loan to keep them afloat. Yes, there are ramifications of such waivers. It is very difficult to ensure that welfare measures reach the farmers every time such schemes are announced. Therefore, it is important that we get away from such an arrangement and ensure that farmers get the right support in terms of production, distribution, price and availability of required loans for expansion.
These reforms are important to develop the capacity of Indian farmers to be on his own.
When the NDA Government came to power in 2014, an assessment of the failed policies of the previous government was made. Some schemes were discarded, others were reinvented besides new policies meant for farmers’ welfare were introduced. In 2018, the Government declared that by 2022, farmers’ income will be doubled and accordingly took reform measures and some far-reaching schemes. It is now incumbent on the State and the Central governments to create awareness among the farmers to take advantage of such ideas and schemes so that the target is achieved as early as possible.
