The tea industry holds a special place in Assam’s heritage. Since ages, tea garden workers have been making invaluable contributions to this sector. In recognition of their dedicated service, the Government of Assam has launched a special scheme titled ‘Mukhyamantrir Eti Kali, Duti Paat’.
Under this scheme, both permanent and temporary workers employed in registered tea gardens of Assam will receive a one-time financial assistance of ₹5,000. Approximately seven lakh tea garden workers are expected to benefit from this initiative. The Assam Cabinet recently approved a financial allocation of ₹342 cr for the implementation of the scheme.
To be eligible, workers must be permanent residents of Assam and employed in a tea garden registered in the State. Additionally, it is desirable for beneficiaries to have an Aadhaar-linked bank account. However, individuals who have already received similar assistance under this scheme in the 2025–26 fiscal year will not be eligible.
Owners of tea gardens, management authorities, small tea growers, government employees, income tax payers, and contractual employees of Government bodies are not covered under this scheme.
Speaking about the initiative, Bidhan Nandoi of Doom Dooma said, “Awareness campaigns are being actively conducted across the tea garden lines to ensure that all eligible workers get the information and no deserving beneficiary is left out.”
