In a series of high-level meetings in the national capital, Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma showcased the State’s remarkable socio-economic progress and laid the groundwork for future development. From briefing Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Assam’s growth to engaging with Union Ministers on power, education, and infrastructure, Sarma’s visit underscored the State’s rising trajectory and strategic importance in the national development narrative.
Assam Chief Minister Dr. Sarma started his official tour meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi to apprise him of Assam’s achievements in socio-economic growth and the near-saturation of key welfare schemes.
“Had the privilege of calling upon Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji in New Delhi today. Briefed him on Assam’s notable strides across socio-economic indicators and the near saturation of major welfare schemes,” Sarma posted on X on July 28.
He also extended a warm invitation to the Prime Minister to visit Assam on September 8. “On behalf of the people of Assam, I conveyed our anticipation to welcome him on 8th September, a moment that will mark another milestone in our State’s development journey,” he added.
During the meeting, Sarma presented the Prime Minister with a traditional Assamese ‘gamosa’ and a set of cultural mementoes — a symbolic gesture underscoring Assam’s rich heritage and the deep ties between the Centre and the State.
PM’s Scheduled Visit to Assam
Prime Minister Modi is set to visit Assam on September 8 to inaugurate the year-long birth centenary celebrations of Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, the legendary cultural icon of Assam. During the visit, the Prime Minister will also dedicate to the nation India’s first bio-ethanol plant at Numaligarh in Golaghat district — a landmark step in sustainable energy and regional industrialisation.
The Chief Minister then called on Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and invited her to lay the foundation stone of the upcoming Kanaklata Barua University in Gohpur.
“Today in New Delhi, I had the honour to invite Hon’ble Union Minister Smt Nirmala Sitharaman ji to visit Assam and lay the foundation stone of the upcoming Kanaklata Barua University in Gohpur,” Sarma wrote on X. “This institution, dedicated to one of Assam’s greatest freedom fighters, Birangana Kanaklata Barua, will be one of the first universities built on an entirely industry-oriented academic approach.”
Dr Sarma also met Union Coal and Mines Minister G. Kishan Reddy to discuss revitalising operations of Coal India in the Margherita region of Tinsukia district.
“Had an excellent meeting with Hon’ble Union Minister Shri G Kisan Reddy a while back. We discussed at length about making Coal India’s operations in Margherita more vibrant, robust and productive. Grateful to the Hon’ble Minister for his time,” Sarma posted.
This discussion reflects the State’s strategic focus on reviving industrial corridors and leveraging mineral resources for sustainable development in Upper Assam.
The Chief Minister also met Hon’ble Union Minister CR Patil and discussed issues pertaining to strengthening the Jal Jeevan Mission in Assam.
On July 29, the Chief Minister continued his engagements, meeting Union Ministers Manohar Lal Khattar and Sarbananda Sonowal.
With Khattar, the meeting discussed ways and means of strengthening Assam’s power infrastructure. Sarma detailed initiatives taken by the Government of Assam to enhance power transmission, cut distribution losses, and implement new energy projects.
Khattar reportedly assured full support from his ministry to bolster Assam’s efforts in the power sector.
A particularly forward-looking meeting took place with Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal on the sidelines of the ongoing parliament session. The two leaders focused on developing Assam’s waterways and port infrastructure.
Discussions included India’s first international Multi-Modal Logistics Park at Jogighopa, which is poised to revolutionise regional connectivity and cargo handling.
“Shri Sonowal and Dr. Sarma discussed at length on realising Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a ‘Viksit Assam’ and ‘Viksit India’,” an official release stated.
