The global stage turned its spotlight on Assam at the Assam State Hall in the World Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan, offering visitors an immersive glimpse into the State’s cultural heritage, tourism potential, and industrial progress. , JB Ekka, Additional Chief Secretary of Industries, Commerce & Public Enterprises Department, Government of Assam, was present on the occasion.
The week long exposition, organized by the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE), ended on September 6. India participated through the Bharat (India) Pavilion, jointly established by the India Trade Promotion Organization (ITPO) and the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA).
At the event, a high-level Assam delegation comprising Diganta Barah, Commissioner & Secretary, Tourism, others; Megh Nidhi Dahal, Commissioner, Industries & Commerce and MD, AIDC; Kumar Padmapani Bora, Commissioner, I&PR and MD, ATDC and Santanu Deuri, Joint Director, Industries & Commerce also took part.
The delegation, along with senior officials of AIDC, showcased Assam’s strengths in tourism, handloom, handicrafts and industry while engaging in high-level discussions with trade delegates and international buyers.
The Assam State Hall attracted impressive footfall on its opening day, with visitors from multiple countries exploring exhibits ranging from handloom and handicrafts to sustainable innovations. Entrepreneurs such as Golden Threads and MJI Group received encouraging responses for their premium offerings—handcrafted textiles, artisanal products, fragrances, and traditional flavours.

For the first time in history, the globally treasured Agarwood of Assam—recognized under the One District One Product (ODOP) initiative for Golaghat—was proudly showcased at the Osaka Expo. Its distinct fragrance, deeply rooted in Assam’s heritage, captured global attention.
Adding vibrancy to the occasion, the Department of Cultural Affairs, Government of Assam, organized a performance at the India Pavilion. A 10-member troupe led by renowned artiste Ranjit Gogoi enthralled the international audience with traditional folk dances, including Bihu, Bodo, Sattriya, Tiwa and more.
The performance, marked by colourful costumes, rhythmic beats, and graceful movements, drew loud applause from a diverse global audience, leaving visitors with a lasting impression of Assam’s cultural richness.
The blend of heritage, sustainability, and innovation resonated strongly with international consumers, buyers, and trade delegates. The showcase has opened new avenues for business collaborations, exports, and cultural diplomacy.
In an official statement, the Assam delegation expressed gratitude to the visionary leadership of Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma and Minister of Industries & Commerce Bimal Bora.
Meanwhile, commemorating the birth centenary of Sudhakantha Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, heartfelt tribute was accorded to the legendary artiste at the event. Informing about this, the official handle of the Chief Minister Office posted in X, “This honour on a global platform not only pays homage to his extraordinary legacy but also reaffirms the universal resonance of his artistic and cultural contributions.”
Minister Bimal Bora wrote in X, “Bharat Ratna Sudhakantha Dr. Bhupen Hazarika’s immortal songs on humanity and brotherhood have touched the hearts of people worldwide, from the Brahmaputra to the Yodo.
It is a matter of immense joy for the people of Assam that, as part of the birth centenary celebrations of the ‘Bard of the Brahmaputra’ a special tribute was offered to the legend through documentary screenings and cultural performances at the World Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan. As an Asomiya, it is a moment of immense pride to witness our very own Bhupen Da being celebrated in countries like Japan. My gratitude.”
