Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has said that any State legislative building is not just a building but a temple for democracy. Speaking at the inauguration of the new building of Assam Legislative Assembly (ALA), Birla said, “The building of any State Legislative Assembly is not just a building. but a temple of democracy. Sitting in this temple, we should work only for public welfare. That is why in this journey of 75-years of this democracy we have taken the nation forward through socio-economic development.”
Birla said that in Vidhan Sabha and Lok Sabha every serious issue should be discussed sans disruptions. “People have a lot of expectations from Vidhan Sabha and Lok Sabha. When they elect you, they do it with a lot of expectations and aspirations. There should be discussions and dialogues in these Houses, and laws should be formed here,” he told elected representatives present in the meeting.
He had words of praise for the new ALA. “It is a historic day for all the States of the North East. This building is a wonderful amalgamation of modernity, heritage, culture, arts and crafts of Assam.”
The Lok Sabha Speaker expressed the hope that the Assembly building will prove to be a centre to fulfill the hopes and aspirations of the people of Assam.

Speaking on the occasion, Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma said that India has been an epicentre of democracy and democratic values since ages. He termed the Assembly as an important institution of democracy.
He said that the Assam Assembly, being one of the oldest assemblies in the country, has played an important role in strengthening the socio-economic-academic and cultural edifice of the State, while focusing on equality and inclusivity.
He referred to several political personalities for their enlightening role inside the hallowed precincts of the Assembly. Dr. Sarma hoped that the new building will ignite dreams and hopes to build a vibrant and developed Assam.
Cabinet Minister Atul Bora while talking to Asom Barta termed the moment as historic and expressed his hope that the new building will shine forever as a glorious legislative pillar to fulfill the hopes and aspiration of the people.
Among those present on the occasion were Speaker of ALA Biswajit Daimary, Deputy Speaker Dr. Nomal Momin, Union Ministers Sarbananda Sonowal and Rameswar Teli, MPs and MLAs, et al.
Prior to the inauguration of the new Assembly building, a ‘griha pujan’, an auspicious ceremony, was conducted on July 29. The ALA Speaker spoke about the historical significance of the Assembly. He also expressed his hope that this Assembly will serve as a platform to address issues faced by the people of Assam.
